Earlier this summer, after what seemed like weeks of rainy days, this week we were fortunate enough to have clear skies and cooler temps. A client of mine asked if we could do a class outside–her question was met with an astounding YES! The picture above is shared with her permission and is a glimpse of her stunning yard. Hard to say no to great scenery.

We worked through a couple of barefoot sessions this week in her yard and we both felt a sense of calm, grounding, along with a cleansed spirit. After some reflection I thought I’d share some of the benefits of an outdoor practice from my perspective.

Our lives are crammed full of activities, people, and thought consuming tasks, among other things. When and how do we take time to SLOW DOWN?

First, I recommend scheduling this. Yes, put it on your calendar. It’s a regular appointment with yourself that you cannot miss. You make time for everyone and everything else, and this is time for YOU. Initially this may prove to be a challenge but over time it will be the a cherished appointment.

Next, pick your adventure. This could also apply to intentionally spending time outside on a walk with your best 4 legged friend, a jog, yoga, or sitting in your favorite chair with a good playlist, or a book. But you’ve got to have a plan or you’ll veer off track.

Then make yourself unavailable. No texts, calls, emails, social media. Easier said than done. But it’s a must.

Super important: breathe. If you’re moving vigorously or sitting still, just breathe. Take in the fresh air. Breathing in the crisp, clean air can improve oxygen levels in your body, boost your mood, and increase your energy levels.

While out and about take note of the natural ambiance provided by outdoor settings which create a serene and inspiring atmosphere. The sounds of nature, such as birds chirping or waves crashing, can act as a natural soundtrack that enhances relaxation and concentration. This organic background noise can help drown out the mental chatter and allow you to focus more deeply on your activity.

Recognize the liberating sense of freedom that enhances both the physical and mental aspects of your practice. Take the time to really appreciate your surroundings and find some inner peace.

And remember, each day looks different for everyone. Some days are easier than others, be sure to acknowledge and thank your body for showing up.
